The porch

Studio Patrick Jantet

The Gothic porch was added in the 13th century. The tympanum above the entrance almost certainly contained sculptures. These were probably removed during the Reformation, a period during which religious images were deliberately destroyed. However, an elegant frieze of foliage entwined around colourful birds and fabulous beasts still adorns the archivolt, i.e. the moulding around the arch above the tympanum. Flowers and palm leaves decorate the lintel and capitals, from which human faces also look down: all of creation is united in celebrating its creator.
