The tombs

The tomb of Henry de Sévery

Henry de Sévery was prior of Romainmôtier from 1371 to 1380. Called to the court of Avignon by Pope Clement VII, he became papal legate and was then appointed bishop of Rodez. At his death, in accordance with his wishes, he was buried in Romainmôtier.

Curiously, his statue has a hole in it! During the Reformation, the bishop's tomb was broken and the recumbent statue was transformed into a fountain goat with two necks! The tomb was restored in 1904 (photo).

The tomb of Jean de Seyssel

Prior of Romainmôtier, he had his tomb built in 1410, more than twenty years before his death. This flamboyant Gothic monument is adorned with sculptures that were mutilated during the Reformation.
