Once at the very heart of the monastery, the site of the former cloister is now hinted at outside the church by low stone walls, green spaces and a fountain.
Originally strictly reserved for the monks, this area enabled them to move around between the different buildings while also offering them a space in which they could meditate in the open air. The monks would also come here to draw water from the well, the only source of water inside the monastery.
Excavations have shown that two successive cloisters existed. The first, in the Romanesque style, was destroyed by fire and replaced by a second, in the Gothic style. All that remains of the latter are the starting points of several vaults on the southern wall of the church. The cloister buildings were demolished following the Reformation imposed by the Bernese occupiers in the 16th century.
