First major restoration

Having become the new owner of the church at Romainmôtier, which was in particularly bad condition at the time, the Canton of Vaud embarked on a major renovation project. Management of the site was entrusted to Albert Naef, Switzerland’s first-ever cantonal archaeologist. Improvement work was done on various exterior elements (façades, roofs, base of walls), while a systematic archaeological survey of the building was carried out. The results of the excavations revealed the importance of the church at Romainmôtier as a piece of Cluniac architecture and built heritage.
