Second restoration project
This second phase of work focused on restoring the 13th century Romanesque murals and the sumptuous paintings and decorative sculptures in the Gothic style, conserving the choir stalls and restoring the stained-glass windows. It should be noted that work was also done to improve the heating and accessibility of the site.
Exterior improvements to the former cloister
In the 1960s, the area around the church was occupied by a road, a car park and piles of manure from nearby farms. In the 1970s, plans to restore the buildings close to the church began to take shape, with Katharina von Arx and the RomainmĂ´tier Foundation providing special impetus.
Excavations were carried out to determine the layout of the successive cloisters. The square was closed off to traffic and landscaped to reflect its monastic past and provide a tranquil oasis in which to relax and contemplate. The majestic willow tree was preserved following a campaign by local residents.
