In 1685, an era of persecution began in France after King Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes. 200,000 Huguenots fled the country and sought refuge in Protestant lands, particularly in Geneva and Germany. The Reformist Waldensians from the Piedmont valleys also went into exile and followed the same route.
The 2,000-kilometre-long international Huguenot and Waldensian Trail traces the historical path taken during this exile. A section of the trail passes through RomainmĂ´tier.
