«La Maison du Prieur»
Guided tours only. Find out more here at the Gatehouse.
Constructed in the 13th century, the structural design of the Prior’s House was regularly transformed and repurposed to meet the needs of successive residents. Originally the home of the Cluniac priors, it then became the residence of the bailiffs appointed by Bern from 1536 to 1798. This explains why the window shutters feature the Bernese coat of arms – a black bear against a yellow and red background.
At one time, the building housed a museum dedicated to Romainmôtier’s past. It was finally saved by writer Katharina von Arx and photographer Freddy Drilhon , who began restoring it in 1959, with the aid of the Romainmôtier Foundation.
The Romainmôtier Foundation acquired the house in 2018. It continues to bring this timeless venue alive by organising various private and cultural events.
