The ambo

Pierre Jouvenat

The famous ambo, an early form of pulpit from which the word of God was proclaimed to all, stands at the threshold to the antechoir.

This exceptional work dating from the 7th or 8th century is decorated in the pre-Carolingian style. It is one of the few items remaining from the second church constructed at Romainmôtier.

Rediscovered in 1905, buried in the ground as a tombstone, the decoration on the ambo is remarkable: a large Latin cross embellished with lilies, symbolising purity, and a rose, symbolising holiness. It bears the Latin inscription “Abbot Gudinus had me made in the name of the Lord.”
