The choir

Michel Gaudard

Once reserved for the monks and clergy, the choir is the most important part of the church. The stalls date back to the 15th century, when they were put in at the behest of Jean de Seyssel, the prior of Romainmôtier at that time. The small shelves beneath the seats are known as ‘misericords’. They gave the monks something to lean on when they were required to stand for long periods.

After being ravaged by fire, the choir was rebuilt in the Gothic style. The vault covering it shows a blue sky dotted with stars. Note the four capitals situated at each corner of the ribbed vault.
